Climate Action at SUAD: Leading by Example
At Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi, meaningful climate action begins within the institution. As a higher education institution, the university recognises its role in addressing the climate crisis through bold, measurable action—reducing emissions, embedding sustainability in operations, and inspiring behavioural change across the community.
Reducing Carbon Footprint
SUAD is committed to a low-carbon future. Between 2023 and 2024, the university reduced total greenhouse gas emissions by 3.64%, achieving a drop of over 220 tCO₂e. This was accomplished through:
- Efficient water management
- Minimised landfill waste
- Operational improvements across leased facilities
Scope 1 and 2 emissions are monitored and managed by Mubadala/SERCO (SUAD's facility management company) as part of the facility’s operational control and reporting framework. The university continues to target Scope 3 emissions—those generated by supply chains, waste, commuting, and water use.
Sustainable Campus Mobility
SUAD is transforming the campus moves by:
- Introducing 19 bicycles for student commuting
- Installing 15 electric vehicle charging ports
- Deploying 2 hybrid vehicles and a 26-seater commuter bus for staff
- Exploring e-bike infrastructure and reducing oversized bus usage
These efforts are helping to lower transportation-related emissions and foster a culture of low-impact travel.
Waste Reduction and Resource Circularity
SUAD’s climate action plan includes cutting emissions through better waste management:
- A dedicated food donation initiative prevents edible surplus from going to landfill
- Increased recycling of plastic, paper, and aluminium
- Ongoing composting of food waste to reduce methane emissions
The Path Forward
Looking ahead, SUAD is committed to:
- Expanding renewable energy integration
- Enhancing emissions tracking tools
- Engaging students, faculty, and partners in collaborative climate solutions
Every initiative, from mobility to waste to procurement, is a step toward the university’s vision of a climate-resilient, net-zero campus.
