Kosmas Pavlopoulos (KP) received his B.Sc. degree in Geology and his Ph.D. in Geology -Environmental Geomorphology, from the Geology Department of the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, Greece in 1986 and 1992, respectively. Since 2013, KP has been Professor of environmental geomorphology in the Geography and Planning Department at Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi. His previous appointments have been in Geography Department in Harokopio University, Athens, Greece from 1999 till 2020. He was chair of the working group on geoarchaeology of International Association of Geomorphologists (IAG) from 2009 to 2017 and member of the Scientific Committee of the French Archaeological School in Athens from 2010 to 2017. From 2017 to 2022 I was a member of the Executive Committee of IAG (International Association of Geomorphologists) as Publication Officer.
Recognized specialists in the field Quaternary Geology, marine Geology, of marine and coastal Geomorphology, structural geology-tectonics, sea level changes, Geoarchaeology, Hydrogeology, Environmental Geology, and Natural Hazards, in the South Europe, Eastern Mediterranean and the Middle East. His research focuses on the sediment’s records in arid and semi-arid areas, geomorphological evolution of marginal landscapes, on the relative sea level changes, on the hydrogeology and the wadi dynamic, on water resources management and on natural hazards.
He has participated in 120+ research projects, 50+ of which as coordinator. He has more than 200 publications in peer-reviewed scientific journals (100 currently shown in Scopus) and his work received more than 1657 citations (h-index = 24, co-authors 238, source Scopus), 2696 citations (h-index = 28, RG interest score=2371, 238 co-authors, source Research Gate), 3042 citations (h-index = 31, i10-index=74, source Google Scholar, see the diagram below retrieved from Google Scholar April 21st 2025)
KP has been a supervisor in 12 PhD and as member of the supervising committee of 28 PhD students. He is member, as an expert in Geosciences and environment, for the evaluation of research projects launched by the Greek Ministry of Research since 2000, by the French institute of CNRS 2004-2007 (ECLIPSE program), by French ministry of Education and Research from 2012-2013 (ANR project), by the MIUR (the Italian Ministry for Education, University and Research) 2015-2016 (Reprise project), by the Ford Motor Company in 2016 (Conservation and Environmental Grants) and in Canada Excellence Research Chairs Program, in “Integrated Solutions for Sustainable Development in remote regions” (2017-2018). Reviewer of Marie Curie post doc scholarship ONISILOS by the Cypriot Ministry of Education (2021-2022). Is member of the Doctoral school of Sorbonne University ED434 “Géographie de Paris” and in UR Laboratoire “Mediations” in Geography and Planning Department of Sorbonne University, Paris, France. Member of the External Review Team (ERT) by the Commission for Academic Accreditation (CAA) in UAE, for the renewal of the Geosciences Master and Bachelor programs (2024).
