General Education Programme 2024-2025
Innovation, Entrepreneurship and Sustainability is a multidisciplinary course designed to provide students with the opportunity to apply their acquired knowledge to practical and ethical challenges. Through modules on business ethics, sustainability, and entrepreneurship, students critically evaluate and develop innovative solutions aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). The course integrates diverse learning activities such as field trips to observe real-world applications, business plan creation to design innovative solutions addressing sustainability issues, and interdisciplinary group projects to solve complex problems. These activities aim to enhance critical thinking and entrepreneurial perspectives, bridging academic learning with real-world application and preparing students to excel both professionally and personally in addressing sustainability challenges.
Modules
"Are the UN SDGs Achievable? Applying the Concepts of Innovation and Sustainability".
This module directly engages students with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, prompting them to critically evaluate their feasibility and develop practical solutions.
"Business Ethics and Social Responsibility" explicitly highlights the critical link between ethics and sustainability. This underscores the understanding that sustainable practices are inherently tied to ethical decision-making in a business context.
Experiential Learning Emphasising Sustainability:
- Field Trips with a Sustainability Focus:
Trip to the "Jaywun Research Vessel" exposes students to marine science and environmental research, highlighting the importance of marine conservation and sustainable practices. -
Visit to "Masdar City" provides a real-world example of sustainable urban development and the technologies employed to achieve it.
- Interactive Training on Climate Change:
The "Climate Change Training with Climate Fresk" offers an in-depth, collaborative understanding of climate change, its impacts, and potential solutions. This active learning approach aims to equip students with a clearer grasp of this critical sustainability challenge.
- Exploration of Social Entrepreneurship for Global Challenges:
The session on "The Role of Social Entrepreneurship in Solving Global Challenges" specifically examines how innovative businesses can address issues like environmental sustainability through sustainable models.
The combination of theoretical learning, practical application through business plan creation, interdisciplinary group projects, and experiential learning ensures that students gain a comprehensive understanding of sustainability principles and their real-world relevance. This approach prepares students to be responsible and innovative professionals capable of addressing the sustainability challenges of the future.
