Tackling Food Waste at SUAD
Managing food waste is a key part of Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi’s commitment to sustainability. As the campus grows, so does the responsibility to reduce waste and create sustainable food systems.
Rising Demand, Stronger Response
With a notable increase in student numbers in 2025, the volume of food prepared and consumed on campus has grown significantly. Despite this, SUAD’s food waste management efforts have scaled up effectively:
- In 2023, food waste composting efforts were limited and inconsistent, collecting a total of 6.6 tonnes
- In 2024, following the implementation of a structured collection system and awareness initiatives, the university diverted over 9.2 tonnes of food waste from landfills
- 2025 has already seen over 3.9 tonnes of food waste collected in just the first quarter, reflecting increased activity and improved collection efficiency across all dining areas.
Composting for a Greener Campus
The collected food waste is diverted to composting facilities, supporting the university’s landscaping efforts and closing the loop in the waste cycle. This practice not only reduces SUAD’s carbon footprint but also serves as a powerful educational tool for students and staff.
