SDG 2: Zero Hunger

The UAE launched the National Food Security Strategy 2051 which aims to achieve zero hunger by ensuring access to safe, nutritious and sufficient food all year round throughout the world. Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi is actively engaged to support and contribute to the success of this mission. Through programs that engage students in community outreach activities and partnerships with local organizations, the university fosters a practical understanding of food systems. By preparing future leaders in sustainability and collaborating with governments and NGOs, the university aims to make meaningful strides toward achieving zero hunger and enhancing food security in the region.

SUAD’s Local Farm

Sorbonne University Abu Dhabi’s facility management company, SERCO, established a local on-site farm in 2014 to cultivate fresh vegetables and fruits, promoting sustainability and support for its community. This initiative provides nutritious, organically grown products to university workers while integrating sustainable farming practices. By prioritising local sourcing, the university enhances its commitment to environmental sustainability and fosters a culture of health and wellness among its working staff, reinforcing its dedication to creating a resilient food system.

2023 Events and Conferences

The Alumni “RED CARPET, GREEN HEARTS” Gala Dinner

Sorbonne

The first Alumni Gala Dinner, held on campus in 2023, highlighted the university’s ongoing commitment to sustainability.

For the occasion, the Deputy Vice Chancellor for Administrative Affairs, Dr Majed Al Khmeiri—who holds a PhD from Sorbonne Université on Strategic Planning and Sustainable Development: The Future of the United Arab Emirates—welcomed guests and spoke about the importance of sustainability and the UAE’s role in advancing it.

The Gala Dinner was an environmentally friendly event, with all equipment used sourced from sustainable materials.

The Career Centre opted for a zero-waste buffet, led lighting and zero printing. They also engaged the Alumni community in raising awareness about climate change by offering sustainable prizes including a stay at an eco-resort.

Ramadan Meal Boxes for SUAD’s Service Staff

During the holy month of Ramadan each year, students carry out a meaningful initiative by donating meal boxes to the hardworking service staff at the university, emphasising the spirit of generosity and community support that characterises the holy month. Understanding that many workers often miss out on traditional iftar meals due to their demanding schedules, the university student community comes together annually to prepare and distribute these meal boxes.
